Presentation details

The presentation provides an overview of the recently released men’s health report with a focus on unintentional injuries and male suicidality. Also discussed are emergent boys and men’s health challenges including online gambling, social media and manosphere influences. Additionally offered are some gender-responsive strategies for working with boys and men to advance their health, and the well-being of their family, friends and community.

Dr. John Oliffe is a Professor and Tier 1 Canada Research Chair in Men’s Health Promotion at the School of Nursing, University of British Columbia. He is the founder and lead investigator of UBC’s Men’s Health Research program. His work focuses on masculinities as it influences men’s health behaviours and illness management, and its impact on partners, families and overall life quality. Findings drawn from his research offer guidance to clinicians and researchers to advance men’s health in the areas of mental health promotion and suicide prevention. The MHR program secured over $48million of competitively funded research with >460 published peer-reviewed journal articles in collaboration with researchers and community partners worldwide. Partnering with Movember, his most recent contributions include co-authoring the Real Face of Men’s Health: 2025 Canadian Report, which highlights the disproportionately high rates of premature death amongst men, and calls for a national men’s health strategy. The report garnered extensive media coverage and public interest, which directly catalyzed the Federal Health Minister’s commitment to develop Canada’s first boys’ and men’s health strategy in early 2026.
